Piano Lessons

Peter Hostage teaches piano to children and adults, from beginners to advanced students. Children can start piano lessons at around age 5, though some children have the finger control to play the keys and the concentration to stay focused for the full half hour at age 4. For adults, it’s never too late to learn to play piano!

All musicians are encouraged to learn at least some piano skills. Because the piano keys show the relationship of musical notes so clearly, piano lessons can help anyone understand music more easily. Piano lessons are a great introduction to music for any aspiring musician.

Beginning piano students will learn proper finger technique, note reading, proper rhythm counting, chord concepts, music theory and more. Basic fundamental concepts applicable to any genre of music are the foundation of a solid musical education.

Intermediate and advanced students will delve deeper into scale and chord theory, improvisation, piano literature, and more. Advanced students can take a path into a particular style of music such as classical, jazz, rock or blues piano. All while learning fun and inspiring pieces of music!

Students can learn on a piano or on a keyboard. Pianos are best, but they can be too big, or too much of an investment for a beginner. Keyboards are more reasonably priced, and a keyboard with full-size keys and a good piano sound can be purchased for less than $200. Keyboards also have headphone jacks that can make it easier for a student to practice without household distractions.

Keyboards should have at least 61 keys for beginner piano lessons. Keyboards should have “touch sensitivity,” meaning that a heavier touch will produce a louder sound. The next step up is “weighted action,” which feels like a piano. Most of these keyboards have 88 keys and can cost more than $500.  If you have further questions about pianos or keyboards, I will be glad to help.
